Round Sixteen Weekly Roundup

It was a week that was always going to be tough to predict with the big guns going head to head and some mid table needle matches – the weekly point’s totals reflect that. James G topped the scoring this week with a grand total of seven thanks to two correct predictions, making him the guru of the week. Tim did his Michael Jackson impression, coming in a little behind to take second place on six points. He did, of course, correctly predict one score right - continuing his impressive run. This has meant, of course, that James G has stretched his narrow lead at the top of the table to three points.

The story of the week, however, was once again John “Lucky Boy” Gall. He once again managed a paltry three points and has finished this week’s football numbnuts, picking up the Maize award along with John N. However, John’s poor run of form for the past two weeks where has picked up a total of six prediction points has been offset by a goal frenzy by his strikers. For the second week in a row John has benefitted from a hat trick bonus – Santa Cruz firing in three against “plucky little Wigan”. He also picked up a further point from the league’s form striker, Yakubu. So instead of being rock bottom of the table, John G has soared up to just outside the money zone with Andrew only holding third place on his correct scoreline prediction tally. This has also meant that Joel has dropped to his lowest position of the season, down to fifth place.

James E still props up the table, though this is all down to not picking up the double points with correct predictions. James E holds fourth spot on correctly predicting results, but lags desperately in last place on the correct score lines. James G still holds a six point lead on the correct results table.

Two milestones were broken this week – James G and Tim have both broken past the 100 points total barrier for the season; meanwhile John has smashed the twenty point striker points barrier.

From next week striker points will all count for double – not just hat tricks. Hat tricks will still only be worth six points, in accordance with the last week’s poll. A special mention must also go to Alastair – he hasn’t picked up the Maize award now for two weeks.

The Chimay Cup: Round One, Second Leg

The romance of The Cup is alive and well. This was a tale of minnow giant killings, spirited comebacks only to have victory snatched away by the smallest of margins, a high scoring ding dong and a clash of the titans turning in to a damp squib. What more could you want from a cup competition. It truly is an Amazing Game. Here is the round up:

Tie One: John G v James E

John G held all the aces going to this second leg with a commanding 10 to 6 lead. However James E rose to the challenge and John G started to choke. In the end James E’s 6 v 3 second leg win just fell short of what would surely have been the greatest comeback in Chimay Cup history. John G is lucky to be there, but he moves on to the semi finals with a 13 to 12 aggregate win.

Tie Two: Joel v James G

It was billed as the clash of the titans. Instead it was two legs of mediocrity. James G went in to the game with a slender one point lead. Joel could not get the points when he really needed them this week and a second leg win of 5 to 4 to James G (13/11 on aggregate) was enough to get him through to the next round where he will face “Lucky Boy” John G.

Tie Three: Tim v Alastair

David versus Goliath. Veteran versus rookie. Prediction guru versus Football numbnuts. Giant versus minnow. Oh how the cup throws up little treats for us. If last week Alastair was doing enough to keep in contention, this week he pulled out the big score when it really mattered. An aggregate win of 13 to 11 takes the people’s favourite and underdog into the semis.

Tie Four: John N v Andrew

The highest quality tie of the round. Andrew went into the second leg with a one point advantage and he didn’t let it slip in the lower scoring re-match this week. The highest scoring match up over two legs, Andrew will face giant killer Alastair in the semis with a 15 to 13 aggregate win.

Round Fifteen Weekly Round Up

Another amazing week in The Amazing Football Prediction Game. It was a week of shocks and upsets – and not only in the Premier League, the Chimay Cup too. All this has meant a low scoring week for everyone, but some have taken this to their advantage. This week saw four players change position in the league – the most movement since Round Eight. No change at the top however, with James G, Tim and Andrew holding the money positions. But below that some under-achievers are starting to make their case. Not least Alastair, who finishes the week as the Guru picking up seven points. Andrew and James E were close behind with six points each. The Maize award goes to John G picking up a paltry three points. However, lady luck has been shining on John G this week...

Yakubu’s hat-trick meant that John G picked up the six point bonus points and has propelled him up the table. This has meant the table is all change. John G has gone from also ran two weeks ago to right back in the game in fifth place only a point behind Joel and only four points off a money place. Incredible. Alastair also picked up a couple of bonus points with Tevez’s brace at the weekend. After seven consecutive weeks at the bottom of the table, Alastair has finally hauled himself up to seventh, leaving James E in his wake. John N has sunk down to sixth, but is still very much in the hunt on 87 points – just one behind John G.

Despite a poor week by Tim, he still managed to correctly predict a score line. This takes him to eleven consecutive weeks correctly predicting at least one score line. In doing so he racked up number 21 of the season. James E still languishes in last place on the correct score prediction table with a meagre eight. James G is comfortably ahead on most correct result predictions – a clear five more than second place Andrew. Only six points then separate Andrew and last placed John G – who has fallen behind a resurgent Alastair.

After next week we enter the busy festive season where forty games in 12 days will all be up for predicting! After this weekend all goal scorer points will also count for double, depending on the outcome of the poll. There is plenty to play for.

The Chimay Cup: Round One, Leg One

An incredible first week in the Chimay Cup. Here is the round up:

Tie One: John G v James E

An incredible week for John G, scoring ten points, has put him in a comfortable position going in to the second leg with James E only managing to score six points. It means he will need to score at least four more points than John G next week to be within a chance of progressing. John G will be on the away leg next week week with a two correct score prediction advantage.

Tie Two: Joel v James G

It was billed as the clash of the titans. As it happens it is turning in to more of a street brawl. Both players correctly predicted a score each, but James G will go in to the second leg with the slight advantage, being seven points to six up. All to play for.

Tie Three: Tim v Alastair

Only Tim’s correct score prediction separates these two at the moment. To think this was seen as the draw everyone wanted, Alastair is now is going in to the second leg with the real possibility of a giant killing feat still very much possible. They are tied at six points a piece going in to the second leg.

Tie Four: John N v Andrew

These two have provided the most interest in the league so far this season, swapping place on an almost weekly basis lately. It has also proved to be the highest quality tie. Both players correctly predicted two correct scores each and have the highest aggregate score of any tie in round one so far. Andrew will go in to the second leg with the advantage, leading nine points to eight and with the away point’s advantage on his side too. All to play for in this tie too though.

Round Fourteen Weekly Roundup

The Amazing Football Prediction Game is just that – amazing. This week it was all about two men. John Gall took the Guru award this week with a fine performance – scoring ten points including two correct score predictions. While this points haul has put John G right back in the game, Andrew Robb was this week’s real winner. He bagged nine points with two correct predictions and a further three bonus points thanks to a brace of goals from Robbie Keane and a single from Torres. This has seen Andrew storm up the table and overtake not only his arch rival in the league, John N, he has stormed past amazing football predictor veteran Joel too. This has put him in money zone.

While Tim only managed five correct result predictions this week, he did manage to correctly predict a score once again – thus saving himself from his first ever Maize award. He was also saved by Ronaldo who scored two goals on Monday which prevented James G from extending his lead by anymore than two points. An average week for Joel, scoring seven points, has proved costly as he has slipped a position to fourth. However, it was left to Alastair and James E to prop up the table this week as they could only get six points each and no correct predictions – landing them with this week’s Maize award. It also means that they are now well adrift of the rest of the pack as we enter December.

On a more positive note for Tim, he has reached a landmark this week – he predicted his twentieth correct result of the season – the first man to do so. Joel picked up his seventeenth correct prediction, putting him in second place of the correct score predictors. James E is stuck on seven correct predictions, putting him at the bottom of the table. The correct result prediction table is still led by James G who broke the eighty barrier this week to go on to eighty-one points. He leads Tim who is on seventy-six. Alastair props up the correct result prediction table with seventy.

As you will be aware, for the final six weeks of the Amazing Football Prediction Game all strikers points will count for double. Currently strikers' also score double points if they score a hat-trick. Therefore, as per the current rules, a striker who scores a hat trick in the final six weeks of play will score 12 points for his three goals. Is this too many?

Round Thirteen Weekly Roundup

Another week with little change to the table, but do not be deceived. Tim has not only claimed another Guru award, but he has closed the gap at the top to just one point. Tim bagged nine points, including yet another correct prediction. John G & Alastair also had successful weeks both pulling in 8 points a piece. John G also reaped the rewards from Yakubu's brace of goals. Is this the titanic revival from Alastair we have all been waiting for? Is this the week John G makes his move and charges up the table? Only time will tell (though common sense does suggest otherwise).

Bottom of the pile this week is the ever erratic Andrew Robb - sublime one week and desperately bad the next. He only pulled in five points this week, something he should be deeply ashamed about.

The table is much the same with James G (82 points) narrowly ahead of Tim (81 points) and Joel (78 points). Despite his heroics this week, Alastair still props up the table on 62 points while James E is doing his best to fend him off with 64 points. John N has moved up to fourth spot, though shares 74 points with Andrew who is in fifth spot - the main battle of the past few weeks is once again the only change in the table. John G holds sixth position in 69 points.

No prizes for guessing that Tim is still the leader of the pack with his incredible 19 correct score predictions. The root of James E's problems can be found in the fact that he has only correctly predicted 7 games correctly. James G is top of the pile for correct results - 74. Alastair can only muster up 64.

The draw for the Chimay Cup has been made - and what a belter it is too. Each tie is full of intrigue and mystery. The pick of the round is James G versus Joel - one of these two giants will have to fall. James E has been drawn against John G in the mentor versus pupil battle. Tim has the plumb draw, he is up against struggler Alastair - is there a giant killing feat on the cards... you never know with the cup. The final tie sees John N go up against Andrew which promises to continue their needle fight from the league.

The Chimay Cup Draw

The AFPG & Chimay Cup Awards Ceremony

Friday 1st February has been designated as the official date for the Amazing Football Prediction Game & Chimay Cup awards ceremony.

The £40 winners prize money is up for grabs, as well as second and third place prize money. There will also be the awarding of the prestigious Chimay Cup. There will also be one or two further awards being handed out on the night.

The venue is yet to be confirmed, but as is traditional with these things The Buckingham is as good a place as any if I can't book the Albert Hall for the evening.
